About Teater Manu
Teater Manu is Norway’s professional sign language theatre, established by the Norwegian Association of the Deaf in 2003, following a resolution of the Norwegian parliament in 2001. The theatre receives funding from the Ministry of Culture. Mira Zuckermann was involved in the theatre’s establishment and has been its Artistic Director since then. She is now retiring.
During the past 20 years, Teater Manu has developed into a state-funded institutional theatre which receives an annual grant of NOK 17.6 million. The theatre is located in the Grünerløkka district of Oslo.
Teater Manu is a touring theatre that presents nationally and internationally renowned dramatic art of high quality.

The Artistic Director is the chief executive of Teater Manu, and is responsible for planning and following up all artistic endeavours, production, and cooperation within the financial frames set by the board.
This is a fixed-term 5-year contract, with an option for renewal. The position will become vacant on 1 January 2022, with repertoire planning work to start on 1 January 2021, the details of which will be agreed with the board.

Teater Manu is seeking an Artistic Director with high artistic ambitions who is able to create unique theatre experiences in sign language for sign language and non-sign language users.
Teater Manu is looking for an ambitious leader who is able to be innovative and present dramatic art in sign language to a wide audience.
The Artistic Director must be a unifying and inclusive leader and have good communication skills in sign language and in writing. Sign language is the working language at Teater Manu.
Experience with policy and strategic work in the field of art is an advantage.
In addition to its artistic mission, Teater Manu has a particular focus on increased visibility, brand-building and national audience growth, as manifested in its strategy.
We are looking for a new Artistic Director who has the following responsibilities and qualities:
- Ensure that our activities for all age groups are of a high artistic level.
- Serve as a key societal actor in connection with language and minority policy.
- Continue to develop Teater Manu as an important arena and player in the development of sign language culture and the dissemination of culture.
- Ensure that children and adolescents are offered a good year-round theatre offering.
- Good knowledge of national and international sign language culture.
